Director of Cloud Engineering
Chorus is seeking a full-time Director of Cloud Engineering for a Type II IoT medical device requiring regulatory clearance. The ideal candidate must be an experienced leader and a team player, collaborating closely with Embedded, Product Development, User-facing Applications and Innovation teams. This role will be leading a dedicated program swim lane, supervising and working alongside high-performing Chorus associates and existing onshore and offshore partners.
The product is powered by a tightly integrated system of 3 microprocessors: 2 STM microcontrollers managing independent low-level hardware functionalities. An ESP32-based IoT module serves as the gateway to the AWS Cloud, enabling seamless communication, command, and control via Amazon IoT services. The backend AWS infrastructure plays a critical role in device management, data processing, and real-time decision-making, ensuring scalability and reliability. The ideal candidate should have strong expertise in building and maintaining enterprise-grade Cloud/IoT PaaS platform with SaaS based solution(s).

Job Description:
We are looking for an experienced Director of Cloud Engineering to lead the design, implementation, and optimization of our AWS-based IoT cloud infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have team leadership experience and deep expertise in AWS services, infrastructure as code (IaC), and IoT solutions while ensuring scalability, security, and operational excellence.
You will play a critical role in managing our IoT Core-based message routing, device management, data pipelines, and cloud workloads while driving automation and best practices across our DEV, QA, STAGING, and PRODUCTION environments.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead the team responsible for architecting, building and optimizing a scalable, highly available AWS cloud infrastructure for IoT-based applications.
- Direct the development of IoT Core-based device management and message routing solutions.
- Manage and optimize InfluxDB, DynamoDB, and OpenSearch for time-series, structured, and unstructured data.
- Oversee the AWS Lambda-based infrastructure, ensuring scalability, security and performance behind the ELB.
- Manage the Implementation of CI/CD pipelines in Bitbucket for seamless deployments using CloudFormation and other IaC tools.
- Lead the develop and management of AWS Lambda functions and API Gateway for external integrations.
- Head up the design, maintenance, and optimization of Step Functions, OTA updates for ESP-IDF powered devices, and S3-based deployments.
- Oversee organizational structure and workload management across multiple AWS environments.
- Ensure security best practices for cloud infrastructure, including IAM, VPC configurations, and compliance policies.
- Optimize logging, monitoring, and notifications using AWS CloudWatch, CloudTrail, and other observability tools.
- Collaborate with firmware, backend, DevOps & cybersecurity teams to enhance system reliability, security and efficiency.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Software or Computer Science Engineering or relevant field.
- 5+ years of experience leading a Cloud Engineering organization with AWS-focused infrastructure with 5+ additional years as a member of such a team.
- Expertise in AWS IoT Core, Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, and S3.
- Proficiency in managing InfluxDB, DynamoDB, and OpenSearch for large-scale data processing.
- Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using CloudFormation or Terraform.
- Deep understanding of CI/CD pipelines, Git (Bitbucket), and deployment automation.
- Strong knowledge of AWS security best practices (IAM, VPCs, Certificates, APIs etc.)
- Exposure to frameworks such as NIST, CIS etc. is desirable.
- Experience with logging, monitoring, and alerting solutions in AWS.
- Proven ability to manage multi-environment cloud setups with workload segmentation.
- Strong problem-solving and debugging skills in a highly distributed, event-driven architecture.
- Self-motivated and demonstrated ability to lead process improvement activities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of ESP-IDF-based OTA update management.
- Experience managing serverless architecture patterns and microservices.
- Familiarity with AWS Cost Optimization and Well-Architected Framework.
- Experience in high-performance, real-time IoT data processing and analytics.
- Experience across all phases of the program development lifecycle, from requirements, capture through design, implementation, and test.
